About the collection

This is a collection of two volumes kept by Midshipman G.B. Harrison while he served aboard HMS Talbot and HMS Jupiter. Volume 1 is a logbook kept Harrison during the ship’s cruise of the North American and West Indian Stations, Sept. 15, 1896 to Oct. 1, 1898. Volume 2 is Harrison’s journal kept aboard HMS Talbot from Oct. 1, 1898 to Nov 9, 1899, and HMS Jupiter, Nov. 10, 1898 – March 14, 1900. Both volumes record observations of winds, weather and courses, and remarks on employment of hands and unusual occurrences. Both volumes are also embellished with numerous watercolor and pen and ink drawings of other ships, maps of Bermuda, Jamaica and Halifax, and track charts showing the routes the ships took from place to place. Several photographs taken aboard the Talbot are also pasted in.
