About the ship Wyoming

Wyoming was a wooden-hulled screw sloop built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and launched in 1859 under the command of John K. Mitchell. During the Civil War the ship was sent to the Pacific Ocean to hunt for CSS Alabama and other confederate vessels and to protect American shipping interests in the Far East. Although the ship never located the Alabama, Wyoming was involved in a battle with Japanese land and naval forces in 1863 at the Battle of the Straits of Shimonoseki. Wyoming returned to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for repairs in 1864.
