About the Glover family

Harry Byron Glover served as a sailor and printer aboard USFS Olympia. HIs brother, WIlliam F. Glover, held the same position of ship’s printer before him.

About the collection

Collection of 21 letters written by Harry Byron Glover to his family in Chicago, from Japan, China and the Philippines, 1895-1898. Glover describes his duties as a sailor and the ship’s printer, comments on ports of call, the assembly of the fleet in preparation for sailing to Manila, and his health and family matters. Also included are programs and announcements printed by Glover, a photograph of him, a letter from his brother William (dated November 12, 1895), 4 letters from Annie Barnet to Harry’s mother (dated June – August 1898), a photograph and autograph of Admiral George Dewey, and several newsclippings.
